What is the Colston Controversy?

Edward Colston is a prevalent presence within the city of Bristol and in recent decades his presence has become the centre of controversy, regarding his namesakes and memorials. There is a growing concern over adapting the presence of Colston to that of the modern era of social and political thinking.

 

Namesakes such as Colston Hall, a concert hall located within the city center of Bristol are at the centre of this controversy. Built in September 1867, it has hosted multiple high levels venues throughout the decades since its inauguration. As a Grade II listed building it is a symbol of “architectural and historic interest”. Stated as the “heart of cultural life” in Bristol, it has such become significant in the controversy of recent years with debate surrounding the name and the historiography behind Colston Hall.

This project will research and discuss the topic of Edward Colston within Bristol and the controversy behind him.

Colston Controversy Documentary

This documentary covers the history of Colston within Bristol and how he has been remembered. This film also addresses the historiographical debate that has grown over the years as well significantly the social debate over Colston which has become so controverisal in recent decades.
